A Quest For Love Tour - Seattle (via @RBSoundSelect)
If you're a fan of dope music, get ready to rejoice... Red Bull Sound Select is bringing their "A Quest For Love Tour" to Seattle! The 12-city tour features upcoming MCs Mick Jenkins and Smino blessing fans with their refreshing take on hip hop. Think meaningful rhymes + dope, melodic vibes sans the ratchet club sound currently dominating the airwaves.
I wasn't previously familiar with either artist, but after OD'ing on both of their Spotify pages it's safe to say I was missing out. On top of that, they're both Midwest natives (Mick Jenkins - Chicago, Smino - St. Louis), so I'm always happy to support my fellow Midwest folks.
The show will be in Belltown at the Crocodile on Thursday, September 29, and is only $3 with an RSVP OR $10 at the door.
RSVP by clicking here.

#Formation
I went to the dog park then came home to #BeySeason in full swing! This video is amazing... watch it a few times. Allow all of the #BlackGirlMagic and #BlackLivesMatter messages to penetrate your soul. It feels so motherfucking good to see an artist and person of Beyonce's magnitude be so unapologetically BLACK and fucking MAGICAL... this video has given me all the feels.

"Hell You Talmbout?" #BlackLivesMatter (@JanelleMonae)
Not only is she gorgeous and insanely talented, but Janelle Monae manages to continuously drop dope, meaningful music and move with grace and poise that is both enviable and inspiring. In short, Janelle Monae is a breath of fresh air!
"Hell You Talmbout" is the latest release from the musician and Wondaland Records CEO, and folks are deeming it the #BlackLivesMatter protest song. The song has a powerful message and is worth a listen. Let me know what you think!

"All We Wanna Do is be Free" (via @JColeNC)
This song right here... absolutely beautiful! Thank you J. Cole.
"Be Free" - J. Cole
And I'm in denial
And it don't take no x-ray to see right through my smile
I know, I'd be on the go
And it ain't no drink out there that can numb my soul
No, no
All we want to do is take the chains off
All we want to do is break the chains off
All we want to do is be free
All we want to do is be free
All we want to do is take the chains off
All we want to do is break the chains off
All we want to do is be free
All we want to do is be free
Can you tell me why every time I step outside
I see my niggas die,
Ooh, I'm letting you know
That it ain't no gun they make that can kill my soul
Oh, no
All we want to do is take the chains off
All we want to do is take the chains off
All we want to do is be free
All we want to do is be free
All we want to do is take the chains off
All we want to do is break the chains off
All we want to do is be free
All we want to do is be free
Are we all alone fighting on our own
Please give me a chance
I don't wanna dance
Something's got me down
I will stand my ground,

Who is Richie Havens?
One of the gems I received while watching the Grammys last night was discovering Richie Havens. I heard a snippet of him singing during the "in memoriam" and was instantly hooked. We did a quick search to figure out the song he was singing and were blown away by the live performance!
Y'all... music just isn't what it used to be! You can feel the emotion oozing out of his soul! So passionate and full of life. Man, this song is just so awesome.. makes me wish I was around during Woodstock to experience all of that talent live.

"And Baby, it's Amazing I'm in this Maze with you....
.... I just can't crack your code..."
Sing it JT!!! I love the way Justin Timberlake is crooning his heart out on Jay-Z's latest track "Holy Grail"... it's just beyond dope to me! I can't wait to listen to the entire album and see if it's worth buying or just buying a few tracks I like.
My boyfriend has a Samsung Galaxy S4 and I was begging him to download the app for the album, but he doesn't really fuck with Jay-Z so that was a fail lol... For anyone that already has the album, what's your verdict?

I don't care, I love it (via @iconapop)
I think this is my official song of summer...
You're on a different road, I'm in the milky way
You want me down on earth, but I am up in space
You're so damn hard to please, we gotta kill this switch
You're from the 70's, but I'm a 90's bitch

Started From the Bottom (via @melaniefiona)
Ever see a chick with a really big ass and be like, man... I want that? Well, listening to Melanie Fiona's version of "Started From the Bottom" makes me long for a set of pipes! Her voice is the perfect blend of "I can really sing, but I'm not obnoxious." I guess I should thank Drake for creating this... and I already know folks will be wearing this saying out all Spring and Summer long.
Speaking of which - - did you start from the bottom? And honestly where is this bottom everyone speaks of? Most people I know started from the suburbs, in a good school system, and now have college degrees and decent jobs. So yeah... I guess "bottom" is relative. Anyways, that's probably entirely too deep for this song.
As for me? I started from the bottom (West Suburbs) and now my whole team here (South Loop). I kinda like the sound of that!

Bitch Bad. Woman Good. Lady Better. (via @LupeFiasco)
I've never aspired to be the baddest bitch of anything. I can't even recall my mom using the term "bitch" until recently when someone was picking on me. Even then it was used with a strong negative connotation. If someone was a "bitch" they were either acting catty, petty, mean, rude... you get my drift. But being a bitch, a "bad bitch" at that was not ever the epitome of success and having made it. Listening to Lupe's song actually made me wonder when the term became something positive.
I have the mouth of a sailor and jokingly drop curse words like the rent is due and they accept f-bombs as a form of payment. For as dirty as my mouth can be, I don't think I've actually spazzed out on someone and cursed them out. Actually, I'm lying. I remembered about 2 times as I was typing this lol.. but definitely under 5 times have I used my curse words as weapons, and never have I used them to mean something great. No awesome bitches. No amazeballs bitches. No bad bitches. Definitely no "she's the epitome of everything I want my life force to be" type of bitches. But listening to this song makes me want to better myself and the vocabulary I use. There's so much to me and if someone just heard a little blurb they may write me off as a proper speaking "bitch" with a dirty mouth and little depth. Is is possible for me to do away with the term "bitch" altogether? I mean, it's not a positive thing and nothing I want to be, so I might just strike it from the record.
When Red Tails came out I blogged about how amazing it was to see how great black people once were. Past tense. Looking around today it's a shame to see the level of coontastic ratchetry that has become mainstream.VH1 reality TV shenanigans, yuck mouth rappers with no talent making it rain 1s on strippers that gave up on their college dreams, even some of the lackluster Chicagoans I see on the CTA... it's enough to make me frown... and I'm a person that typically shits out sunshine and sparkly glitter, so it takes a lot for me to frown. I know music with a meaning isn't popular today, but I really do wish this stuff would get a bit more shine.
It's nice to have some thought provoking music with superb lyrical content, and his song makes me even reconsider my use of the word bitch (among others). Does Lupe's song touch a nerve with you?
"Bitch Bad"
[Intro]
Yeah
I say bitch bad, woman good, lady better
Hey, hey, hey, hey
[Verse 1]
Now imagine there’s a shawty, maybe five maybe four
Ridin’ ’round with his mama listening to the radio
And a song comes on and a not far off from being born
Doesn’t know the difference between right and wrong
Now I ain’t trying to make it too complex
But let’s just say shawty has an undeveloped context
About the perception of women these days
His mama sings along and this what she says
“Niggas I’m a bad bitch, and I’m bad bitch
far above average”
And maybe other rhyming words like cabbage and savage
And baby carriage and other things that match it
Couple of things that are happenin’ here
First he’s relatin’ the word “bitch” with his mama, comma
And because she’s relatin’ to herself, his most important source of help,
And mental health, he may skew respect for dishonor
[Hook]
Bitch bad, woman good
Lady better, they misunderstood
(I’m killin’ these bitches)
Uh, tell ‘em
Bitch bad, woman good
Lady better, they misunderstood
They misunderstood
(I’m killin’ these bitches)
[Verse 2]
Yeah, now imagine a group of little girls nine through twelve
On the internet watchin’ videos listenin’ to songs by themselves
It doesn’t really matter if they have parental clearance
They understand the internet better than their parents
Now being the interent, the content’s probably uncensored
They’re young, so they’re maleable and probably unmentored
A complicated combination, maybe with no relevance
Until that intelligence meets their favorite singer’s preference
“Bad bitches, bad bitches, bad bitches
That’s all I want and all I like in life is bad bitches, bad bitches”
Now let’s say that they less concerned with him
And more with the video girl acquiescent to his whims
Ah, the plot thickens
High heels, long hair, fat booty, slim
Reality check, I’m not trippin’
They don’t see a paid actress, just what makes a bad bitch
[Hook]
[Verse 3]
Disclaimer: This rhymer, Lupe’s not usin’ bitch as a lesson
But as a psychological weapon
To set in your mind and really mess with your conceptions
Discretions, reflections, it’s clever misdirection
Cause, while I was rappin’ they was growin’ up fast
Nobody stepped in to ever slow ‘em up, gasp
Sure enough, in this little world
The little boy meets one of those little girls
And he thinks she a bad bitch and she thinks she a bad bitch
He thinks disrespectfully, she thinks of that sexually
She got the wrong idea, he don’t wanna fuck her
He thinks she’s bad at being a bitch like his mother
Momma never dress like that, come out the house, hot mess like that
Ass, titties, dress like that
All out to impress like that
Just like that, you see the fruit of the confusion
He caught in a reality, she caught in an illusion
Bad mean good to her, she really nice and smart
But bad mean bad to him, bitch don’t play your part
But bitch still bad to her if you say it the wrong way
But she think she a bitch, what a double entendre
[Hook]
[Outro]
Bitch bad, woman good
Lady better, they misunderstood
You’re misunderstood
Bitch bad, woman good
Lady better, greatest motherhood
(I’m killin’ these bitches)

Chicago Singer Sam-U-L
Have you ever been walking down the street and accosted by a young, R&B singer? Well, it happened to me this weekend.. Typically the men yelling out cat calls and hollers in Chicago are, shall we say... smelly and homeless lol... but my girlfriend and I were pleasantly surprised to meet someone with an ounce of actual talent!
Sam-U-L is a Chicago vocalist that serenaded us on the streets of Viagra Triangle. I was digging his sound and think he could probably get signed... but I do think hopefuls and anyone, for that matter, trying to get "put on" should be more about their business. Yes, getting in the streets and singing it awesome, but why not take it a step further and have a business card ready. You only need to include your name/stage name, email address, website... pretty standard information.
Sam-U-L told me to find him on YouTube.Okay... easy enough, but after doing a few searches all I could really find was the below video. It's free to create a YouTube page so I say go for it! Get yourself a page for self-promotion. Get a business card. Have some legit way of having people follow-up with you. Life is one big game of "6 degrees of separation" and you never know who you're meeting or who they may know. So, while his voice was on point his business savvy was lacking.

Working at the Pyramid Tonight
I've been completely obsessed with Frank Ocean's newest album "Channel ORANGE" the past few weeks, my favorite song being "Pyramids." I've listened to that song at least 100 times, no joke. I don't know what it is, but I can't get enough of it. If you haven't copped the album yet I'm not sure what you're waiting for - - but be about that life and go to iTunes for the download asaptually.
The 2nd part of the track is my favorite...

@thekickback Opening @ Taste of Chicago 2012
I was introduced to the Chicago band "The Kickback" last week at an event up North. They're pretty awesome in person and I shot a quick video of them performing one of their songs.
They'll be opening up for the Taste of Chicago this year which is HUGE! Catch them for free on the Bud Light Stage (Balbo & Columbus Dr.) July 11th from 6:40p - 8p. In the meantime check them out below.
Follow the band on Twitter or Facebook.

Corporate X Album release party
When my girlfriend told me we'd be stopping by an album release party last night I had no clue what to expect. As long as it wasn't for a rapper I was pretty much game lol, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear the melodic sounds of Corporate X. Comprised of guitarist Casper Xavier and singer Christine DeLeon, listeners were treated to songs from their new album, The X Project, in addition to a few cover songs.
I know artists hate being compared to other artists, but for the sake of painting a picture for readers they had a very "Florence and the Machine" sound. Live music is always a great thing, so I urge everyone to get out there this summer and bless their ears and eyes to a live performance.
The X Project is available for download on iTunes for $5.94 - - a steal!

And that's how you make panties fall off...
Have you ever listened to Marvin Gaye? Not just listened to him... but really listened to Marvin Gaye with someone that's a musical connoisseur of Marvin Gaye? Well, let me tell you... be prepared when you do. Have some wine, candles and a fresh pair of panties because I can guarantee the ones you're wearing will be soaked! Ahh, Marvin Gaye. That man was amazing.
I recently had the chance to listen to a few songs and it dawned on me that while Al Green was singing his heart out about emotions, Marvin Gaye was swooning women and smooth talking panties into a legit ninja vanish! The man had game. I'm not the most soulful person anyone knows (by far), but listening to older music I was able to fall into a groove and appreciate the quality that is really lost nowadays.
So, in good fun who is your favorite: Marvin Gaye or Al Green?
...the man in action...

Watch The Throne...
Last week my girlfriend and I headed to see 'Ye and Jay-Z in concert. It was amazeballs. Kanye West + A hometown crowd? "Y'all n*ggas ain't ready!"
To say that I enjoyed myself would be a gross understatement. The concert was bananas!!! If it's headed to your city please grab some tickets because you don't want to miss it. 3 hrs of non-stop performances from both Kanye and Jay-Z, 40+ songs, drinks, good times...
We ended our nights with one of our favorite spots - - Bijan's Bistro!! I think we were feeling inspired by the concert, but we dined on one of our favs: Escargot! Only Lontier and I eat escargot at 2am like it's nothing lol....

Hot Fashion from Iggy Azalea's "My World" Video
By no means am I proclaiming Iggy Azalea as the next "big thing" in the world of female rappers, but after watching her "My World" video, I need to give her stylist props! I'm absolutely loving the fashion she's rocking and actually think she's a pretty cute girl... Almost too cute to be rapping about her "Pu$$y" and what not lol... but to each their own. Those black/white stripe wedges, black leather studded vest, leopard print wedges, Dalmatian dot skirt, and hot pink dress (which Forever21 has a version of - - not yet on the site, but in store)... give me all that PLEASE!
I'm not someone to jump on the "white girls can't be rappers" bandwagon, and after watching a few of her videos I kinda like her style. I think it satisfies my nasty, "Three 6 Mafia" loving side. Oh, you didn't know? I'm OBSESSED with Three 6 Mafia and Project Pat. Actually, most people who know me already are aware of that gem and have been privy to hear me go ape shit crazy rapping their songs lol...
Sidebar: A few months back I was at the club with LadyLaLaCPA and the DJ played a 30 min Three 6 Mafia set!!! Oh-Em-Gee! That is unheard of - - especially in Chicago clubs. I think that may have been the best 30 minutes of my life in terms of club moments.
If a rap career doesn't pan out, the Australian looker could easily be a model. What do you think?
