'Twas the week before Christmas and this Seattle transplant couple finally decided to get festive and buy a tree! Whole Foods was selling 6-7 ft Fir trees for $40, which I considered a great deal for a luscious, full and REAL tree.
I know this might be basic holiday fare for most, but it's a new thing for me as I've never had a real tree in my life, and hadn't done the holiday decorating thing as an adult.
Now, we have a beautiful tree, ornaments for days, and even stockings with bells! It's a Christmas explosion (by my terms) in our house. As we trimmed the tree, sipped on wine, and listened to holiday music it instantly spread holiday cheer. I was like, oh... NOW I get it lol.
How do you celebrate the holidays?

Happy New Year
Adding to my blogging struggles was my highly anticipated trip to the Dominican Republic with my bestie LadyLa83. We spent 5 days frolicking on the beaches of the DR and taking our ratchet shenanigans international! I had a lovely time, learned so much, and actually appreciated the fact we were without cell phones and internet access. It was refreshing to be unplugged from the matrix for a few days, and I don't think we could've done it any other way - - cold turkey like an addict.

New Year's Eve |
I started writing this post on January 2nd, but my life force has been on shenanigans as of late so I'm finally finding the time to post this now! The new year is in full swing and I'm slightly ashamed to admit I spent the first few days on a 72 hr champagne diet. Yes... I solely survived on champagne, orange juice, and restaurant food for 3 days. It was kind of amazing. Oh, and a hookah! Can't forget about the hookah. I'm not a smoker, but I'm always down to light up a hookah. Homemade cocktails, great friends, and a hookah - - what better way to start 2012!

I got back to the states last week and intended to blog about my trip, but realized that there's a certain beauty in keeping some things just between the people that were there. I'll share a few funny moments in another post, but I won't be my usual self and OD on Facebook albums lol.
I can't believe that I'm boarding another flight in the AM to head East for work. This is my first official business trip and I'm looking forward to it, but slightly dreading having to fly again - - only because we were JUST flying and I literally just washed the sand out of my clothes from the DR vacation. Nevertheless, I'm blessed to have a job and will rise to the occasion. Maybe the down time in the hotel will allow me to crank out a few blog posts.
If you're still reading my blog, muchas gracias. I always realize that when I get busy living life, I sometimes start to slack on my blogging... which is a good thing because everyone needs to pull their head out of the computer long enough to enjoy the people around them... plus I'm getting TONS of blog material lol.
So, what posts are in store?
1) Update on my hair color/Brazilian Blowout
2) Brazilian Blowout (the company) sent me a wonderful, handwritten thank you card for the posts I've written along with the entire line of products
3) Finally posting my full review/video (hopefully) of the curlformers
4) Art of the Ninja Vanish
5) Interior Design and Apartment hunt updates
6) A few random things about life, love, and reality TV lol

Ho Ho Ho...
Merry Christmas!!! Just looked up and realized that I haven't blogged in weeks. It's pretty funny because I've had numerous blog posts running through my mind (a few I'm still on the fence about whether or not I can get away with writing lol), but my life has felt like a soap opera lately... one big shenanigan, if you will. My girlfriend @ladyla83 and I have even coined our festivities "Shenanigans in the City." What do these shenanigans include? Many nights of being lost in the sauce lol...
This year Christmas is feeling a lot like any other day of the year. Not sure if that's due to the deployment and being in the midst of an apartment hunt, or because I'm grown and clearly don't believe in the magic of Santa lol. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to wrapping up the final week of the year and my vacation to the Dominican Republic in 10 days :) Yay for fun in the sun!
My intention is to put the pieces of my life back together and crank out a few blog posts before 2011 comes to an end.... and for anyone that cares, Tuesday is my half birthday :) so I may need to be in these streets to celebrate.

Turkey Day Reflection
It's Thanksgiving Day 2011 and guess what? Millions of people are crawling out of the woodworks to spend time with friends and family... some begrudgingly lol... but today marks the one day (aside from Christmas) where people feel societal pressure to reflect and show others love. I'm of the mindset that we should approach each and every day with the "attitude of gratitude," but I don't mind the emphasis on Thanksgiving...
So, dissecting the word: Thanks-Giving....
I'm first thankful for having time! Time is one of the most precious, if not THE most precious commodities in the world. I mean, there's even a new movie out about it lol. But seriously, I'm very thankful for God to have given me the time - - the 27 years I've had on this Earth. Within time I have seen that all things are possible. Broken hearts can heal. Sickness can turn into better health. People grow. Life just happens - - and none of it would be possible without time. Time is also mysterious because in a control freak, ocd, instant gratification world, it is one of the few things nobody has control over.
When I think about giving, I often reflect back to when I was younger and would give my TIME volunteering. Kinda crazy how what I find most precious (time), is what I'm most grateful to be able to GIVE. I am happy to give not only my time, but also my love and friendship because going through this world alone is a grim reality for some people. It's a cliche saying, but I feel extremely blessed to have the love and support of my friends and family, but to be able to GIVE that same love and support to them is amazeballs.
I have no plans to stuff my face or fall into a food coma this Thanksgiving. If anything I'll indulge in some delicious ham (because you can never have enough ham lol), but I'm eating to live, not living to eat lol.
I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and really spends their time, their precious time... doing exactly what they want with the people that matter most. Life is short and you never know when your time will be up. Live it to the fullest and with no regrets.

Happy Veteran's Day
As an Air Force wife I know firsthand the level of dedication, sacrifice, and stress military families go through... all too often having nobody understand or even care. Today I want to wish a very happy Veteran's Day to all of the amazing troops (past and present) risking their lives every day, as well as the families that support them.
The military experience, though not for the faint of heart, is a great one full of opportunities to learn and grow along the way. There's nobody I'd rather go through this with than the love of my life, my husband. It's kind of funny that he's working on Veteran's Day, but most troops are working while we're out living our lives - - enjoy the freedom we have because it does come with a price!

Shrinkage is real + Halloween Recap
I feel compelled to start this post with a complete soul baring moment of honesty. Not many people show you pictures of their hair looking a hot ass mess, but I like to keep things 100% real on my blog and I want to let people know that natural hair is no joke. A hair style can start off SMOKING HOT and burn in flames by the end of the night.
Exhibit A - - Halloween night my hair was GREAT but I knew the humidity in the club would ruin it. The hat my costume came with was the master of disguise, but at the end of the night - - SHRINKAGE IS REAL!!! My girlfriends and I got a great belly laugh when I took my hat off and revealed my big surprise. My shit was busted. However, I was white boy wasted at this point and could care less about my hair lol... still, it was a slight shock that my straight hair held up so well. I probably should've left the hat off lol.
As I mentioned in my post on Friday, I was planning a slightly ratchet birthday weekend with my girls and I did exactly that. Well, Friday night was next level ratchetry (is that a word?) and guess what - - I enjoyed EVERY.SECOND. I grabbed a hotel downtown for the weekend and was in staycation mode.
Sidebar: I'm completely smitten with River North!!! Must.Live.There.Now!
Friday (prior to doing hoot rat things), my company hosted a happy hour where I found myself experimenting with red wine and beer. I actually stunned myself by drinking 2 beers (also learned how to use a keg lol) and was feeling quite nice as I left work for the day. Note that even though my curls were falling (it was kinda warm in my building that day), my hair was still together for the most part.
After failing to hail a cab for what felt like an eternity, I made the short trek to the hotel where I met up with the birthday girl and proceeded to get the night started.
We celebrated at the TGIFresh Halloween Masquerade event @ Tantrik and let me just say, their $40 wrist band deal is a thing of beauty!! $40 for an open bar 9p - Midnight? Yes, please.

Also, many props to Beauty by Valina, the makeup artist that handled my girlfriend's makeup! She did an amazing job recreating the Lady Gaga Born This Way skeleton look, and the birthday girl looked amazeballs in her costume!! My costume wasn't too shabby either lol... but nobody was touching my girl!

It felt nice to be out celebrating one of my best friends, seeing her surrounded by her favorite people - - just growing older together. *electronic tear*
I was excited to try the escargot bourguignonne (one of my favorite things), but I still think Bijan's has them beat. The sea scallops were delicious and the lamb meatballs hit the spot too. The food at Paris Club is basically a French version of a Spanish Tapas spot. The prices are mid-range and overall everything was pretty yummy. We did have great service, but the server goofed up our check pretty big time, so that glitch did leave a sour taste in my mouth. I think this place would be great for bday dinners for rather large groups (6-10 people), but in terms of Tapas, Cafe Babareeba is still my hands down favorite place ever!!!
Most of us were still wiped out from doing hood rat things Friday night, so we called it a night after dinner. I crawled back into my hotel bed and drifted off to sleep. My staycation was amazing! I need to do that at least once a month.
How'd you spend your Halloween weekend? Any ratchet moments? lol...

Halloween, General Glam style...
Happy Halloween weekend to everyone!! I'm hours away from what is sure to be an amazing weekend with some fab ladies. One of my besties, and fellow blogger, is celebrating her birthday and the ratchetness is sure to ensue... in a good way of course! Our big Dominican Republic trip is on deck within a few months, so we're keeping things lowkey, yet still fabulous with a staycation weekend of sorts.
What are your holiday plans?

I had no luck finding my favorite Halloween costume EVER from 2008, (I still have this costume, but it's packed away at my house in Arizona...) and those 3 costumes I bought back in 2009 and didn't get to wear? Those are in Arizona too... packed in a box lol.
This year I opted to go back to my 2008 military inspiration and picked up the "General Glam" costume!! I'm pretty much obsessed with this, but we'll see how everything comes together tonight. The club we're heading to has wreaked HAVOC on my natural hair in the past (i.e. it's a fucking sweat box), so I'm going to arm myself with bobby pins, a hair tie, and the hat that (thankfully) my costume came with.

Naughty or Nice?

This holiday season will be an interesting one in the workplace. In additions to layoffs, companies have been finding other ways to cutback on their expenses...many opting to cut holiday bonuses, promotions, new hiring, and holiday parties!
In my short tango with corporate America (5 years) I've seen everything from lavish, black tie parties all the way to "you call this a party?" type of parties. I can imagine that this holiday season will produce more of the latter. Nevertheless, it's important to remember a few things as you partake in the festivities:
1. Don't get drunk. Yes, free liquor is fantastic...but getting sloppy drunk, acting a fool, and having to see the same people 5 days a week for the next, however long you work there, isn't a good look. It's not Vegas. What happens at the party doesn't stay at the party. I have some funny stories from seeing co-workers, namely bosses, get sloppy drunk and act out. Yes, it was funny at the time (because it wasn't me. lol...) but in the long run it made it hard to look at them the same and respect them.
2. Dress appropriately. Of course you want to step in the room and stunt...but try to tame it down a bit. These are your co-workers and they don't need to know the ins and outs of your cleavage or the curve of your butt.
3. You are the company you keep. If you're able to bring a guest please exercise some caution. Anyone that you bring around is going to be a direct reflection of you...and you don't want to be known as the one that brought the crazy lush with you.

It's December and you have 11 months behind you to account for. Don't mysteriously get amnesia because I'm sure your employer won't. Take an honest look at what you've done this past year. Focus on your pros, ways to fix your cons, and go into your meeting prepared. It's always nice to take the time to write some stuff down because you want to be prepared with whatever your employer throws your way. Also, it shows that you care and with the economy being in the black abyss (and forecasted to stay there for a while) you want to protect your job.

Thanksgiving '08
Thanksgiving...not just a time to catch up with family but more importantly a time to make your rounds stuffing your face with tasty treats!
For me - - greens, ham, sweet potato pie and candied yams hit the spot! I spent Thursday, Friday and Saturday overindulging in scrumptious food...only to wake up Sunday morning and realize that I needed to hit the gym. Statistics say that the average person gains 5-10 lbs during the holidays and I'm not trying to join that team. Here are a few tips to not expand your waistline during the holiday season:
1. Try carrying a clutch and a drink when you're at a party. The lack of a free hand will prevent you from picking up any hors d'oeuvres...thus not adding any extra calories from finger foods.
2. Remember that alcohol has a lot of calories..so when you're throwing back the drinks and eating a ton you're more than likely overdoing it. Just an FYI:
*Martini - 69 calories
*Red Wine - 125 calories
*White Wine - 97 calories
*Margarita - 270 calories
*Long Island - 144 calories
Basically, if you can order a martini and sip on that for the night you're doing great...but if a margarita is more your speed then limit yourself to 1 and try to eat healthy. Another smart idea...alternate every alcoholic drink with a glass of water.
3. Make time for exercise. Try writing your workout schedule on a calendar and sticking to it.
If your company has a workout facility in the building take advantage of that. You can dedicate 2 of your lunch hours during the week to walking or hopping on a bike. I'm also a fan of couples going to the gym together. You can motivate one another and better yet, have someone to shoot cute glances to while you're working up a sweat!
4. This may seem fairly simple, but eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full. Too many times people gorge themselves with holiday food like it's the last supper...though completely understood this isn't necessary.
5. If you're going to be out for a while try eating before you leave your house and packing a snack for the road. I have no qualms about walking around with a zip lock bag full of cheerios or fresh fruit. Yes, it's very similar to what you'd feed your toddler...but it works.
6. One of my personal favorites, wear something fitted. You get the benefits of looking great when you walk thru the door but are able to tell when you've eaten enough (i.e. you have to unbutton or unzip something which typically results in a sigh of relief or a huge smile...). This is also a way to monitor your weight gain, if any. I am not a fan of scales since as women our weight fluctuates all the time...but you can tell when certain pants are too tight to pull around your hips or that shirt has a roll or bump that wasn't there before.
7. Limit how much you eat out. Go to the grocery store and actually cook dinner! Not only do you get a great meal but you may have leftovers which will make an even better lunch....and you'll save money. Chances are that whatever you're cooking will be healthier and more filling than anything you could grab while out.
8. Be active! Just because the weather isn't the best doesn't mean you have to stay inside. Winter sports are tons of fun....plan a trip skiing, snowboarding, or just go outside and make some snow angels or ice skate. There are numerous ways to get out and about this holiday season.

Hello, my name is Scrooge!

Not only will I be forced to hear Christmas music in every store I visit from now until mid January...but I'll have to compete with parents and their strollers the size of SUVs in the malls....

The temperature will drop to freezing and patches of black ice will attack your vehicle landing you in a ditch on the side of the road...that is if your car hasn't been blocked in by the snow and salt trucks that bogart their way down the streets.
Yes, it's the beginning of the winter holiday season in Chicago and all I can do is think about the last 5 years I spent in Arizona.

Labor Day 101
What is labor day? It's safe to say that as long as I get a day off work, I don't care about the history of a holiday...but I was curious as to where "labor day" came from! I mean, if we can get a "labor day" can we put into effect a "daughter day" or maybe a "girlfriend day". The ever handy www.reference.com was able to provide me with some background info...
-Labor Day is typically the first Monday in September
-In was started by the Knights of Labor in 1882
-Created as a day off for the average working man
-Made a National holiday by the US Congress in 1894
-Symbolically celebrated as the "end of summer"
